When Janaína Brand Dillmann, also a veterinarian and master in the Postgraduate Program in Veterinary Medicine at UFSM, decided to continue her studies with her advisor Silvia, but now working with biotherapy, and in her doctorate, Lapavet gained the reinforcement she needed to make biotherapy happen. Focused on animal health, his thesis “Biotherapy with Lucilia cuprina : antimicrobial activity and efficacy in experimentally infected wounds”  concluded that the larvae of the fly species Lucilia cuprina are safe and effective in healing the wound and eliminating “ methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus “ (MRSA), a bacteria that is resistant to several antibiotics, including penicillin. Its resistance is due to the excessive use of antibiotics and, as a result, bacteria evolve and are able to resist more medications. In Janaína's study, it was understood that biotherapy could represent an alternative for use in healing wounds resistant to conventional treatments. For the tests, infected wounds were induced in Wistar rats. The basis for developing Janaína's thesis was based on the premise that the Lucilia cuprina species was safe for therapeutic use.

The researcher says that, in veterinary science, it is assumed that this species causes primary myiasis in sheep, but this is not confirmed, as it is a genus of flies that do not feed on living tissue. What happens is that flies are attracted to the odor of damp, dirty wool, encouraging them to lay their eggs there. However, the larvae that are born there do not penetrate the skin, they only remain on the surface and, when they feed on dirt, they scarify the skin and encourage the installation of infections caused by microorganisms present there. As the species was already used in clinical cases of wounds in horses at DM Databases the HVU, and that on a global scale the species had reports of use in injuries to humans, it was chosen for the doctoral thesis. The other issue that permeated Janaína's work was the growing global concern about the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, including in wounds, making treatment difficult and time-consuming, and often leading to the amputation of limbs. From this, Janaína began in vitro research (in the laboratory) only with the secretions and excretions of the larvae against the bacteria most commonly found in wounds, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , in addition to the resistant bacteria MRSA.



In these tests, we noticed that the secretions/excretions even managed to reduce the formation of bacterial colonies, however, without eliminating them completely”, he comments. Then, we moved on to the in vivo part (with living organisms). In it, the direct placement of Lucilia cuprina larvae in rat wounds induced and infected by MRSA was evaluated , in order to compare with routinely used techniques, such as mechanical debridement using saline solution and gauze and the topical application of antibacterial ointment. Therefore, the results were excellent. The wounds treated with the larvae healed faster than groups of routine techniques and maintained a healthier appearance until complete closure, including the earlier return of the animals' hair. There was still complete elimination of MRSA from the wound bed. With this, it was concluded that the set of actions of the larvae (such as movement, alkalinization by ammonia byproducts of digestion, antimicrobial products from secretions/excretions, and the mechanical action of feeding on necrotic and infected tissue) are largely responsible for the elimination of bacteria.
